What should be in an artist's studio? Revealing my experience.

An artist's studio is a place where time stops and work should be comfortable and convenient. I will reveal the backstage of my space and tell you what is important to have in an artist's studio.

I get asked a lot of questions about what I have in my workshop that is particularly handy and necessary. Here is a list of what I use almost every day:

  • Large tables of comfortable height - I have two such tables, I constantly move them around depending on what stages of painting are at work
  • Shelving for storing materials - for cans, paints, everything - whatever is needed for the artist's work
  • An easel - my easel is standard size and I'm already thinking about getting a new larger one
  • Professional customisable light - I use both for shooting and for everyday ongoing work when standard light is not enough for me
  • Stable tripod for shooting
  • A spectacular backdrop to shoot against - just make sure you have the space in your studio to put it up
  • Ventilation and good daylight are very important for comfortable work. The more daylight and windows you have the better the work. I have four skylights which give very good light. But in the winter time I do not get enough light
  • An aesthetic area with a sofa for clients to have a leisurely tea and chat about art. In this area you can conjure endlessly, the limits are only in the budget and your imagination: a sofa, a table for a beautiful tea pair, flowers, vases and figurines.... All this adds zest to the workshop, your unique flavour and makes your space special.

Ideally, every metre of the workshop should be used for working or shooting. I strive for that and I'm always thinking of something. I like to do this and it's a special kind of meditation for me: I like my space to be beautiful, clean and cosy.

It's worth noting that the bigger your workshop is, the more possibilities you have to design it in an interesting way. I have 90 square metres and I am already short of space and want more.

I wish you very much to have your own workshop, a place where your masterpieces are created, where creativity stops time.
